When I learned that I was responsible for creating a literacy activity in the library for Freedom's Reading Night, I decided to create a Poetry Cafe. Parents and students who attended October's Reading Night were invited into the library to enjoy a "taste" of poetry. I've always wanted to try a poetry tasting in the school library, and I had a lot of fun planning it.
Poetry Cafe guests were greeted by soft background music, poetry flashing on a large screen, and tables covered in tablecloths. Each table was filled with a variety of poetry books from the library's collection. Students grabbed a "paper plate" from a table and browsed through poetry books. If they found a poem they wanted to keep forever, they merely copied down the poem and decorated the plate with crayons.
If they wanted some "fast food," they could select a poem already printed on paper. They were then encouraged to read the poem, glue it to the plate, and decorate it with crayons.
I had so much fun working at the Poetry Cafe and would love to try it again sometime soon.
